SSL certificate

SSL is a security protocol mainly used to protect sensitive information sent over the internet.
The reason for using an SSL certificate is to prevent any unauthorised access or manipulation of the data sent. SSL certificates should be used in connection with e.g. e-trade, order forms, logins, intranet, handling personal details or other sensitive information.
An SSL certificate can be compared to a digital ID consisting of your domain name, company name and in certain circumstances your contact information. Which proves exactly who you are. When you connect to a domain using an SSL certificate a secure connection is established which involves a unique key being created for this connection only and the traffic will be encrypted.
Serious certificate issuers will check that your company exists, who owns the domain name and whether you are entitled to apply for an SSL certificate.
