What is the difference between a ccTLD and a gTLD?

A gTLD, or generic top level domain, is a top domain which is not affiliated to any specific country but which addresses groups with common aims and affinities. gTLDs usually consist of three or more characters. Examples of gTLDs are .com, .net, .mobi, .aero, .asia, .travel.

A ccTLD, or country code top level domain, is affiliated with a specific country. ccTLDs consist of two characters. Today there are approximately 250 ccTLDs. Each ccTLD has its own set of rules and its own price structure. With a few exceptions, ccTLDs are delegated according to ISO 3166-1 alpha-2. Examples of ccTLDs are .se for Sweden, .no for Norway and .de for Germany.

Is it possible to register domains containing å, ä, ö?

Previously it was only possible to use the Latin alphabet a-z and 0–9 and hyphens (ASCII code) in domain names. However, since 2003 it has been possible to have domain names which use other letters, so-called IDN, Internationalised Domain Names. This permits e.g. .se addresses with å, ä, ö, é and ü and .net-, .nu-, .info and .com addresses with other characters (â, à, æ, ë, ê, ç, õ, ø, etc.), particularly for the major Asian languages.

How many top domains are there?

In which domains should I register?

A domain portfolio should go hand-in-hand with your trademark strategy and can therefore differ considerably from one company to another. The strategy should be drawn up in relation to the trademarks, products, markets and competitors. Qpol has considerable experience in domain strategies and is pleased to help our customers draw up a complete domain portfolio to match their requirements. Please contact us to begin or complete this work.

How can we recover a domain we have lost?

If the domain is still available it is simply a question of registering it again. In the event of the domain having been registered by someone else, we can either help you buy back the name or attempt to take it back by means of legal action. Contact us and we can assess your requirements and recommend the best route for you to take.

Can you help us draw up a domain name strategy?

Yes, we can help you with solutions to help you choose and draw up domain name strategies as well as trademark strategies. We recommend that all companies should have a domain name strategy. The domain name strategy should form the basis for all choices made and actions taken by a company in connection with the registration of domain names and hosting services. The strategy should be in written form and communicated to all parts of the organisation to be properly maintained for as long as possible.

A domain name strategy often goes hand in hand with a company's trademark strategy or is part of it. For this reason it is important to register the domain name for the trademark or trademarks you have registered and in the countries where your trademark is valid. Because registration of a trademark takes much longer than that of a domain name, the domain name should be registered first for protection in the countries in which the trademark will be registered.

The domain we want to register has been taken, what do we do?

The procedure of taking over an already registered domain name varies according to the conditions. If you can prove that a trademark infringement has taken place, the domain name can be taken over by means of legal action. In other cases the only alternative may be to acquire the domain name from its current owner.

Contact your Account Manager or Support and we will help you find the best solution.

Who has to be registered as the owner of our domain name?

We recommend to most of our customers that they centralise their domain ownership as far as possible, but this naturally depends what your company is like and what strategy you have. Please contact us and we can help you.
